Intended to attain an information-based economy and social improvement, the Portuguese education system has been going through a significant reform process based on the Europe-wide strategy of modernizing higher education. Moreover, together with Bologna Process, a number of strategies have been developed to expand the access to higher education, to enhance quality in education, and modernize and internationalize it.
The Portuguese higher education is divided into two sub-groups, which are university education and polytechnic education. The official network of higher education institutions is comprised of 14 universities, 20 polytechnic institutions, 36 private universities and 64 private polytechnic institutions.
